Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new all-electric G-Class, known as the G 580, with EQ Technology. Continuing the tradition of the model series introduced in 1979, this electric version of the legendary G-Class retains its rugged features, including a ladder-frame chassis, selectable low-range off-road gear system, independent front suspension, and a rigid axle at the rear.

Mercedes-Benz electric G-Class: Powertrain

Powering the electric G-Class is a 116kWh battery pack, providing an impressive range of up to 473km according to WLTP standards. The battery is well-protected within a torsion-resistant casing to shield it from water and dirt intrusion. Additionally, an underbody protection system, crafted from a mix of materials including carbon, ensures the battery is safeguarded from physical impact.

The electric G-Class is equipped with four individually controlled motors - one at each wheel - delivering a combined total output of 587PS and a peak torque of 1,164Nm. Working in conjunction with ESP and the central powertrain control (CPC), this setup provides precise torque delivery when needed for optimal traction. The electric SUV accelerates from zero to 100kmph in just 4.7 seconds and boasts an electronically limited top speed of 180kmph.

Mercedes-Benz electric G-Class: Advanced off-road capabilities

The electric G-Class features virtual differential locks via torque vectoring, enhancing its off-road prowess. This drivetrain enables unique driving functions tailored for off-road use, such as the G-turn, G-steering, and an intelligent off-road crawl function. Additionally, the electric G-Class introduces the G-roar function, offering distinct driving sounds known as "aura" and various event sounds.

With a redesigned off-road control unit, new off-road cockpit, and transparent bonnet, the electric G-Class is well-equipped for adventurous off-road excursions.

Mercedes-Benz electric G-Class: Design & interior

In terms of design, the new all-electric G-Class maintains its iconic appearance, with subtle updates including a slightly raised bonnet, new A-pillar trim, distinctive grille, and roof spoiler lip. The air curtains in the rear wheel-arch flares contribute to optimised aerodynamics and interior aeroacoustics.

Inside the cabin, the electric G-Class offers a familiar layout reminiscent of the G-Wagon. Features include a 12.3-inch driver display, complemented by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Other amenities include ambient lighting, a hi-fi sound system, powered seats, connected car technology, and an array of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

With its blend of classic G-Class ruggedness and modern electric powertrain technology, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology represents a significant step forward in the evolution of this iconic SUV.
