MG Hector Black Storm Edition vs Tata Harrier/Safari Dark: What is different?

MG India has introduced the new Hector Blackstorm Edition in India. This is the first in years the Hector is available in a special edition version. All-black cars, especially SUVs, are popular in the market, hence major carmakers offer their SUVs in an all-black avatar, namely Tata Dark range, Maruti Suzuki Black Edition, and Hyundai Knight Edition, among others. Here we compare the new Hector Blackstorm with the Tata Harrier and Safari Dark edition versions.

MG Hector Blackstorm Edition vs Tata Harrier/Safari Dark: Highlights

To start with, the Hector Blackstorm Edition features a Starry black colour scheme and all its flashy chrome elements on the outside have been replaced by gun-metal finish inserts with red accents, such as the grille, logo, bumpers, doors trims, tail light section, and skid plates. Notably, the Hector Blackstorm is available in a choice of three seating layouts, such as five, six, and seven-seat versions.

On the other hand, the Harrier Dark and Safari Dark boast an Oberon Black exterior paint job with 'Dark' lettering badges on the front fenders. Like the Hector Blackstorm, the Harrier and Safari also get black treatment for grille, wheels, and roof rails.

On the inside, the Hector Blckstorm, as the name suggests, comes with an all-black interior, including black leatherette upholstery for the seats with 'Blackstorm' lettering. In contrast, Tata has given its Harrier and Safari the Blackstone interior theme paired with Piano Black inserts, and leatherette upholstery with 'Dark' lettering embroidered on the headrests.

There are no significant changes to the feature-list of the Hector Blackstorm and continues with a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system, connected car tech, a panoramic sunroof, multi-colour ambient lighting, powered boot opening, electronic stability control, ventilated front seats, six airbags, a 360deg camera, and ADAS.

The key highlights of the Harrier and Safari Dark editions include welcome and goodbye animation light at the front and rear, seven airbags, 10-speaker JBL sound system with Harman AudioworX, dual-zone temperature control, and ventilated front and second-row seats, TPMS, a panoramic sunroof, rear headrest cushions, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, all-digital instrument cluster, telematics, hill descent control, Terrain Response Mode Selector with display, powered front seats, and Alexa with Car-to-Home functionality, among others.

Powering the Hector Blackstorm Edition is a 143PS 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 143PS and 250Nm of torque and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel motor that makes 170PS and 350Nm of torque. The former comes mated to a CVT automatic transmission, while the latter is coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Dark editions of the Harrier and Safari get a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine (the unit same as the Hector diesel) mated to a six-speed manual and a new automatic transmission with shift-by-wire technology. This motor generates 170PS and 350Nm of torque.

The prices of the Hector Blackstorm start at Rs 21.25 lakh and go up to Rs Rs 22.76 lakh (introductory). Whereas, the Harrier Dark edition prices range between Rs 19.99 lakh and Rs 26.44 lakh, while the prices of the Safari Dark edition start at Rs 20.69 lakh and go up to Rs 27.34 lakh.
