2021 BMW S 1000 R launched in India at 17.9 lakh

BMW Motorrad India has just launched the all-new 2021 BMW S 1000 R in India in three levels of trim – the standard at Rs 17.9 lakh; the Pro at Rs 19.75 lakh; and the Pro M Sport at Rs 22.50 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). The all-new BMW S 1000 R will be available as a completely built-up unit (CBU) and can be booked at all BMW Motorrad India dealerships from today.

This naked derivation of the S 1000 RR gets some refreshed styling cues in the form of the new and narrower headlight unit - that's quite similar to the F 900 R, replacing the old asymmetrical unit - new indicators, new tank shape, and looks a lot more aggressive and purposeful now with all the sharp cut panels gravitating toward the front axel. While the first gen S1000R shared its tail section with the RR, this second gen model has a slightly different and slimmer design compared to the supersport model on which it is based.

The 2021 S 1000 R's 999cc in-line four is derived from the S 1000 RR, although it's been detuned to produce 167.2PS at 11,000rpm and 114Nm at 9,250rpm. BMW has optimised the engines mid-range torque curve to make it more street friendly and between 4,000-9,000rpm the bike has more torque than the RR. The gearbox too has been optimised for street use and features a modified 4th, 5th and 6th gear are now slightly longer than on the RR to provide lower revs for cruising.

Like the RR, the new S 1000 R shows a lot of emphasis on performance and weighs in at a modest 199kg, while the Pro M Sport variant which is equipped with the M performance package that includes the M GPS-laptrigger, M-Endurance chain, an Akrapovic exhaust, M Sport seat, a lighter battery and some sweet carbon wheels, drops the weight down to 194kg (fully fuelled). The new 'Flex frame' uses the engine as a load bearing member and is similar to the setup on the S 1000 RR and is said to aid not only the agility of this motorcycle, but also its aerodynamics, allowing it to stay narrow, while helping keep the weight in check.

In terms of equipment and electronics features, the new S 1000 R gets a 6.5 inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity, a new hand brake pump with a new reservoir and new handlebar clamp. The motorcycle also gets a substantial electronics package that includes multiple riding modes – rain, road, dynamic and dynamic pro; wheelie control, cornering ABS, traction control system as standard configuration. In addition to these features, the Pro and Pro M Sport trim bikes gets Riding Modes Pro, Dynamic Damping Control, a bi-directional quickshifter, cruise control, heated grips, adaptive headlights, different DRLs and keyless ignition.

BMW also gives you the option of getting your all-new BMW S 1000 R sport the iconic colours of the BMW M 1000 RR. The exclusive M Motorsport paint finish is reserved for the M package with the base colour Light White non-metallic in combination with Light Blue, Dark Blue and Red.

The S 1000 R faces competition in the form of the Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS, the recently launched Ducati Streetfighter V4 and the mighty Kawasaki Z H2.
